About PEMF Therapy
What is PEMF and how does it work?
PEMF stands for Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field therapy.
It uses a device to generate low-frequency pulsed electromagnetic fields around the area being treated.
PEMF has been investigated and used in a range of human and veterinary settings. Different devices use different frequencies, intensities and treatment protocols, so PEMF is not a single standardised treatment.
In my work, I may use PEMF alongside equine manual therapy where I consider it appropriate for the individual horse.
How do I use PEMF?
I use PEMF as one of the tools available to me when working with horses. I do not regard it as a substitute for assessment, appropriate veterinary care or other treatment that a horse may need.
Whether I use PEMF depends on the individual horse, its history and what I find during my assessment.
My focus remains on the horse as a whole, including movement, function, compensation and the relationships between different areas of the body.
If I have concerns that require veterinary investigation or advice, I will recommend that these are addressed appropriately.
What do we know about PEMF?
Electromagnetic therapies have been investigated for many years, and particular forms of electromagnetic stimulation have established medical uses in specific circumstances.
Research into other applications of PEMF continues, but the evidence varies considerably according to the condition being studied, the type of device and the treatment protocol used.
For that reason, I prefer not to make broad claims about what PEMF can treat or achieve.
Where I use PEMF in my equine work, I use it as part of an individual approach rather than as a stand-alone solution or a replacement for veterinary care.
